Raise the Colours Statement from the Bournville, Cotteridge and Leader of Birmingham Labour Group, Councillor Nicky Brenna.

“I am deeply troubled by the violent incidents that took place in Stirchley in which one resident was allegedly attacked and hospitalised and another reportedly punched in the face following the actions of the group “Raise the Colours” in attaching flags to lampposts on Pershore Road.”

“This group has been banned from carrying out similar activity elsewhere and Birmingham must take these concerns seriously. While people may hold different views on flags and patriotism, there can never be any justification for intimidation, harassment or violence.”

“I do not believe we should accept individuals coming into our communities to divide residents, create fear and undermine the strong sense of community and cohesion that #Stirchley is known for.”

“I understand that work is already underway around legal action, including consideration of injunctions and Community Protection Warnings against groups such as this, but we want to see the pace of that work increase. I have a meeting with senior council officers on Monday morning and I will be making clear that residents need action and reassurance.”

“I will also be working closely with Selly Oak MP Al Carns, who has already written to the police regarding these serious incidents which require a joined-up approach to resolve and reassure residents.”

“As someone who loves Stirchley and all it has to offer, I know residents and visitors deserve to feel safe in their community and should never feel intimidated while going about their daily lives. I will also be looking at what support can be provided for local businesses that have been affected by these incidents.

“Our message is simple: Birmingham is a city of strong communities and people looking out for one another. We will not accept behaviour that seeks to bully residents, spread fear or divide our communities.
