A local Councillor has secured a proposal for road safety measures to be installed, 12 months after a man was tragically killed crossing a Northfield street.Â
Local resident Tina Ward’s father sadly died in hospital after being struck by a car in Egghill Lane, close to the junction of Norrington Road, on the evening of Sunday 3rd March 2024. Â Over the last 12 months, Cllr Simon Morrall (Frankley Great Park) has supported Tina and her daughter Sophie, fighting to get road safety measures installed by Birmingham City Council Highways department.
Now Cllr Morrall is asking local residents to express their support for the proposals, which would see five speed cushions – or ‘speed bumps’ – installed along Egghill Lane between the Frankley Beeches Road and Frogmill Road junctions.
The proposals also include a flashing speed activated warning sign as drivers descending the 50mph limit Egghill Lane enter the urban 30mph limit zone.

Cllr Simon Morrall said: “This has always been a problem road with cars speeding off the country lane and not slowing down for the 30mph zone. Thankfully, I am pleased to announce, following our campaign, we have managed to finally get Highways to put some plans together.
“The next phase is the public consultation. Residents living close to the road should have received a letter from the council this week detailing the plans with a form for you to send back.”
Urging local residents to back the proposals, Tina said: “It is so important that the residents and neighbouring areas agree to the proposal. Although it’s too late for my dad, I really don’t want this to happen to anyone else. The past 13 months have been unbearable.
“I would like to thank Simon for taking this proposal forward and also for the support of dad’s neighbours in supporting us throughout this process.
“Speed was the main factor in my dad’s death. I want this to raise awareness around how speeding kills innocent people. I just hope that this proposal makes people think and gets them to slow down, and not just down that road.”

Tina’s daughter, Sophie Belsey added: “Speeding has been a long occurring issue on Egghill Lane, the road where my grandad had lived. Physical measures need to be put in place. Traffic calming on Egghill Lane will be a huge deterrent – keeping pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers safe.
“Please support the proposal. The driver who hit my grandad probably would have been home a couple of minutes sooner – is it worth the rush?”
Cllr Simon Morrall said: “I just want to thank Tina and Sophie, for being brave and continuing to push me on this. I am so relieved, that we are finally able to do something on this road and sadly it shouldn’t have taken the loss of your father for the City Council to act on it.”
