A creative six-year-old from Cotteridge is celebrating after winning a charity competition to design a book cover.
Ivy-Mae Hughson won a collection of classic children’s books, a notebook with her design on the front and a selection of art supplies, including crayons, pencils and markers, as the overall winner in the national competition organised by Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care.
Youngsters were invited to submit their entries on a tropical parrots theme, with all entry proceeds from the £1 suggested donation going to Alzheimer’s Society.
Marie Wilson, assistant branch manager at Scrivens on Pershore Road South, Cotteridge, said: “Alzheimer’s Society is our chosen charity and this was a fun way to engage children and raise awareness of its work. Ivy-Mae’s colourful picture was a worthy winner.”
Mum, Emma Hughson, said: “Ivy-Mae was having her eyes tested and saw the competition. We thought it was for a good cause. She loves art, colouring and anything to do with craft. She loves reading too, so she was very happy to win.”
Branch staff have looked after Ivy-Mae’s eye care since she was three years old.
Emma added: “I’d like to thank the staff who are really friendly and amazing and always welcome the whole family.”
Scrivens is supporting Alzheimer’s Society for a seventh successive year and regularly runs in-branch activities to raise funds for the charity.
There is evidence of a link between uncorrected hearing loss and dementia, including Alzheimer’s.
