Around 70 firefighters have been battling a huge blaze at a Kings Norton scrapyard this morning (Wednesday 1st April).

The service responded to calls to Lifford Lane, just after 10.30am to find a ‘significant scrapyard fire’ which was also affecting a neighbouring timber yard.

Fourteen fire engines, a hydraulic aerial platform and a 4×4 brigade response vehicle attended, crewed by firefighters from Kings Norton, Bournbrook, Northfield, Woodgate Valley, Highgate, Smethwick, Aston, Aldridge, Erdington, Handsworth, West Bromwich and Haden Cross stations.

As of midday, West Midlands Fire Service reported that the blaze had been brought under control, saying: “Firefighters have brought the fire under control.

“A nearby railway line has not been affected by this incident, and trains are running as normal.

“Please, continue to keep your windows and doors closed if you live or work in the area, and avoid Lifford Lane and surrounding roads whilst we work at the scene.”
