Discount supermarket chain Lidl are hoping to bring a new store to Northfield as part of their expansion plans in the UK.

The chain are preparing to put a planning proposal to Birmingham City Council and are asking locals to submit their views to help them shape plans.

The proposals would see the north-eastern section of Northfield Shopping Centre demolished to make space for the new store and car park, facing Bristol Road South.

The store would provide increased shopping choice for locals as well as approximately 40 new jobs.

An exhibition will take place in Northfield Shopping Centre next week.

  1. The plans and idea is good. But it won’t bring customer foot traffic to other shops to help them. The separate car park will encourage the shopper to visit that one store and then leave the area, without encouraging the shopper yo visit other shops and stores. The prosoect of having a cheap food store in the area is extreamly good. But it will only help that one company- as aldi shoppers only visit aldi and sainsbury shoppers generally only visit sainsbury. [ due to.patking restrictions etc] . Ideally be better to improve parking access to and from an existing plot like the old wilkos – encourage shopping and and ease to convey bags if shopping to a car etc – and promote foot traffic to visit the other stores there too. The plans only seem to benefit Lidl and not the whole shopping area.

  2. Would be good to have one in Northfield. However, I do feel there needs to be a connection between Northfield shopping centre and the Lidl… it also looks like the extension that was built for Wilko is what will be demolished.

  3. Good plan as long as access to Bristol Rd is not detrimental to traffic flow. It would be good to see at least part of old shopping centre demolished for a new building with the extra benefit of extra parking

  4. Not sure really, there’s already a Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Iceland in close proximity so is a Lidl store really necessary. Maybe time to think outside the box?

  5. Would that impact the either ramp onto the a38? The exit onto Church Road is already very crowded… would that be the only exit?

  6. This would be a fantastic addition to the area. Others comment that ‘there is already an Aldi in Northfield’, yes; one which is so popular there is regularly a queue out of the car park. Lidl is the UK’s cheapest supermarket, and can make a real difference in low-income/deprived areas such as Northfield, which I’m sure you will all be aware contains some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the UK.

As for them knocking down part of the shopping centre; fabulous. Indoor shopping centres are old fashioned concepts from the 80s/90s that are failing nationwide. Many towns are demolishing their entire shopping centres so that shops relocate back out onto the High Street invigorating them in the process. One only has to look at Birmingham to see all the big brands moving back outdoors (Apple, Sports Direct, H&M) leavings tonnes of empty units in both the BullRing and Grand Central rendering them commercial failures. Northfield should knock down the entire shopping centre and perhaps then its actual high street wouldn’t be a sad sight of unhealthy fast food takeaways and charity shops.

I also don’t see how this would cause any additional traffic. Customers of this Lidl won’t be new food purchasers; they’ll currently be purchasing food just elsewhere, likely Aldi or Sainsbury’s. It’ll simply change journeys slightly away from those to here, meaning the net impact on Northfield’s traffic is neutral. In fact it may make the traffic jams at the Black Horse Pub junction a bit better.

All in all a marvellous scheme and about time there was some good news for Northfield High Street after decades of decay and stagnation.

  7. I think having a Lidl will be great! Really giving local people a choice of where to shop. As Aldi northfield isn’t up to scratch

  8. Great idea but a link between the other shops would be useful and easy for shoppers ie disabled shoppers and mothers with children northfield park should not be touch we haven’t many park areas left now

  9. As long as they don’t push the self service agenda like Sainsburys are, if I wanted a job in a supermarket I would apply, Aldi open up tills if they see people waiting
