The iconic Birmingham event returns this November, bringing music, community spirit and cardboard creativity to raise vital funds for young people facing homelessness.
Hundreds of people are being called to brave the cold this November as St Basils Big Sleepout celebrates its 35th year of raising money to help young people at risk of homelessness.
The annual event taking part on Friday 28th November at Millenium point has become one of Birmingham’s most loved fundraisers, part challenge, part celebration of community, where participants swap their beds for cardboard and sleeping bags for a night under the stars, all to support St Basils’ vital work across the West Midlands.
This year’s Sleepout promises a lively and heartwarming evening, featuring the West Midlands Fire Service Brass Band performing Christmas favourites, Langar Aid serving up hot curry to keep spirits high, and the ever-popular Creative Cardboard Competition where participants transform cardboard boxes kindly gifted by Sandland packaging into imaginative shelters for the night.
With more young people than ever feeling the strain of the cost-of-living crisis, low wages, and rising food and energy bills, St Basils says the event’s message of solidarity has never been more urgent.
“The Big Sleepout has been going strong for 35 years because of the incredible generosity of the community,” said Barrie Hodge, Head of Fundraising and Communications at St Basils. “It’s a night that shows the very best of Birmingham, people coming together to do something good and help young people build brighter futures. A huge thank-you to everyone who supports us, from participants and volunteers to our amazing partners like Sandland Packaging, whose donations help make this event possible.”
Over the years, the Big Sleepout has raised thousands for St Basils services, which include providing safe accommodation, mental health support, and pathways into education and employment for vulnerable young people aged 16–25.
