Local Election 2026: Deadlines for registering to vote, postal votes, voter ID & more

Don’t miss your chance to vote!

🗳️ REGISTER TO VOTE: Deadline 11.59pm Monday 20th April 2026

If you haven’t already, you can register online before midnight on Monday 20th April. If you have changed your name, address or nationality, you will need to reregister.

It takes just a few minutes! Visit www.gov.uk/registertovote

✉️ POSTAL VOTING: Deadline 5pm on Tuesday 21 April 2026

If you wish to apply for a postal vote, you must apply online by 5pm on Tuesday 21 April 2026.

Alternatively, you can download a printable form and hand deliver to the relevant Council’s Elections Office by the deadline.

🤝 PROXY VOTING: Deadline 5pm on Tuesday 28 April 2026

If you can’t get to the polling station yourself but don’t want to vote postally, the deadline to nominate another person to vote at a polling station on your behalf is 5 pm Tuesday 28 April 2026.

You can:

‼️ EMERGENCY PROXY VOTING: Deadline 5pm Election Day, Thursday 7th May 2026

In an emergency situation only (eg: medical emergency or new disability, last minute travel for work, loss / non-arrival of Voter ID), proxy votes can be applied for up to 5pm on election day. In the event of an emergency situation preventing your vote, visit www.gov.uk/how-to-vote/voting-by-proxy or contact the Birmingham Election Office (details below) for assistance.

🆔 VOTER ID: Deadline 5pm on 28th April 2026

ALL VOTERS MUST BRING VALID VOTER ID TO BE ABLE TO VOTE. Full list of accepted forms of ID.

If you do not have any accepted ID, you can get a free Voter Authority Certificate (VAC).

You can apply:
• online on the GOV.UK website
• by post by completing a paper application with a photo enclosed. Download printable forms
• in person at the council elections office (book an appointment using contact details at the bottom of the page)

Polling cards were sent out at the end of March. If you didn’t receive yours, you can still vote at your specified polling station, as long as you are registered to vote. To see where to vote, enter your postcode below:
