CANCELLED Further update 7.25pm Weds 3rd September: A member of the West Midlands Naturist Association has told ITV Central: “Due to the hostility and for the safety of the walkers I’ve made the decision to call off this walk event.”

UPDATE Wednesday 3rd September 5pm

A ‘naked walk’ by Birmingham naturists is planned to go ahead on Saturday (6th September) but the position of the authorities has been clarified.

In a statement issued today (Wednesday 3rd September), a West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We have been made aware of the event. Events of this type do not require police approval and police have no powers to either deny or grant permission.”

Promotional materials issued by the West Midlands Naturist Association reportedly claimed that the event was city council approved. However, Birmingham City Council cabinet member Cllr Majid Mahmood told B31 Voices: “While we are aware of the walk and have liaised with West Midlands Police about it, the council has not approved or endorsed the gathering. We have advised organisers that this is not an ‘event’ with council backing and they have now agreed to remove our logo from any material.”
