As part of our 2024 General Election coverage, we have contacted each candidate standing in Northfield, Bromsgrove, Edgbaston and Selly Oak constituencies asking them to contribute to this election’s ‘500 Words’ series. We have also asked the same of each candidate in the local council by-elections for Northfield and Kings Norton North wards.

Each candidate has been invited to describe themselves and their campaigns in their own words. Their submissions will be published without editing, in the order that they are received. Should they be longer than 500 words, they will be cropped.

Daniel Molloy-Brookes • Conservative • Kings Norton North (BCC By-Election)

When your Labour councillor resigned, causing a local by-election, I decided to throw my hat in the ring and stand to be your local councillor for Kings Norton North.

As someone deeply involved in the local Scouts and community activities in Kings Norton, I wanted to ensure that our area had representation on Birmingham City Council that truly cares for the community.

I have loved every minute of this election, talking to the wonderful people of Kings Norton who have so many amazing stories about the area and a profound love for their community. These conversations have reinforced my commitment to making a positive impact in Kings Norton North.

One of my key priorities is fighting to save the Fairway Centre, a daycare centre that supports disabled and elderly people and is currently under threat. Additionally, I have been fighting to save Kings Norton Library, which your previous Labour councillor voted to close. These institutions are vital for our community, providing the most vulnerable in society with a place to engage, feel warm, and be welcomed.

Our roads, like Redditch Road, are in desperate need of resurfacing. That’s why I have been backing residents with a campaign to fix the potholes and resurface the road. Well-maintained roads are crucial for the safety and convenience of all residents.

But it’s not just about campaigning — I have been actively involved in litter picks and clean-ups, helping to tidy our area and will continue to do so. Keeping our community clean and pleasant is a collective responsibility, and I am committed to leading by example.

Our area is being failed by the Labour-run City Council. They have run the council into the ground, and now they are making us pay for it. Our libraries are under threat of closing, our bins go uncollected, and our council tax is rising. Grass verges go uncut, and litter blights our streets. It’s time for a change.

Let’s not reward Birmingham Labour by electing another Labour councillor who will not care for our area or stand up for Kings Norton North in the council chamber. I will stand up for our area, fighting tooth and nail to protect weekly bin collections, oppose the unfair council tax increase, and represent residents in a Labour-dominated council chamber.

I will fight for every penny of available funding, whether it’s for speed calming measures on Wychall Road or to get our potholes filled. Ensuring that our area gets its fair share of resources and attention is a top priority for me.

If you want a fresh, local voice to champion our area, vote for me, Daniel Molloy-Brookes, on July 4th.

Together, we can make a real difference in Kings Norton North. Your vote is crucial for bringing about the positive change our community needs.
