A teenage boy has been given an eight year sentence for raping two girls on separate occasions in Birmingham.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday (5th April) for the offences, which took place last November and in January this year.
The first attack occurred in the Rednal area of Birmingham on the afternoon of 28th November last year. After talking with a 16-year-old girl, the boy raped her in a lane near Great Park.
The second took place on New Year’s Day. Shortly before 8pm, the boy was travelling on a bus along the Sutton Road. When the bus made a stop on the route, he followed a 15-year-old girl who had gotten off and then raped her twice.
Following an investigation during which Police captured CCTV footage and carried out extensive enquiries, officers arrested the 17-year-old on suspicion of rape on 4th January. He was subsequently charged with the two rapes on New Year’s Day and for the November attack.
The boy was remanded in custody until last week’s court appearance. In addition to his custodial sentence, he will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order and sex offender notification requirements.
DS Leanne Tully from the Child Abuse Investigation Team, said: “I want to pay tribute to the girls who were subjected to these appalling, opportunistic attacks for the courage and resilience they showed throughout our investigation. With this offender now held to account, I do hope the girls can begin to move forward with their lives.”
