Eight West Midlands Fire crews tackled a blaze at a ‘suspected cannabis factory’ in Selly Oak this morning (Wednesday 9th December).

The fire started at around am in the roof of a three storey building in Bristol Road South, close to the Oak Tree Lane junction.

Residents of flats were evacuated and Bristol Road South was closed as 40 firefighters assertively brought the fire under control, preventing further spread through the roof space.

The road was reopened by 8am with some residents being allowed back in to their homes, while others had to be found alternative accommodation.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: “ We were alerted to a large fire at a flat above a café on Bristol Road in Selly Oak just before 3am this morning (Wednesday 9 December) and officers attended to manage the city’s outbound traffic.

”It was later discovered that the flat contained a cannabis factory and enquiries are now underway to find out who is responsible for the growth.”
