A popular summer family event will not be returning to Northfield town centre this summer.

An urban beach in Prices Square or Victoria Common has been a seasonal highlight for many for over a decade. The last two years have seen an additional event bringing the beach to Kings Norton Green

As well as a real sand beach with deck chairs, the event provides several days of family entertainment including music, theatre, animatronic dinosaurs with themed days such as Reggae at the Beach and Jurassic Beach.

The event also provides a space for local community organisations to connect with families, enabling them to access support if needed and in recent years has been part of the government’s Holiday Support Fund scheme.

The event is run by an independent charity and is NOT council funded, with funding sourced from various organisations and funders in the past. However, with funders facing huge demand, organisers have been unable to secure monies for an event this year.

But, despite their disappointment, organisers Northfield Community Partnership (NCP) are certain that it is not the end for Northfield Beach and are looking forward to bringing the event back in the near future.

NCP Chief Executive Officer Rebecca Debenham said: “We know that this news will be disappointing to the community of Northfield as the Beach has become a much loved event over the 12 years it has been running.

“All of us at NCP are devastated that we will not be able to bring the Beach to you this year, we know that this event is especially important to families through the Summer Holidays.

“We would like to assure everyone that we are working hard behind the scenes to ensure that the Beach event next year will be the best one yet.”
