Firefighters from Northfield were delighted today to present a cheque for £100 to Emma Enock.
Emma, a Year 6 student from Rednal Hill Junior School, was drawn from many of her school friends who completed a fire safety checks of their own homes after receiving training from firefighters at Red Watch Northfield in July.
Head Teacher Mr Graham Catt said: “The response from our childrens parents was fantastic, it really made them think about safety in their home and whether their smoke alarm was working.”
Watch Commander Ade Lyden said: “Our aim is to provide fire safety education to children across the West Midlands and to raise the awareness of the dangers of fire, particularly in the home. We have a range of programmes and initiatives supporting this goal.”
Proactive work carried out by crews includes:
· visiting schools regularly to deliver fire safety education to different age groups
· inviting schools to visit Fire Stations and Fire Safety Centres
· attending school events, open days etc
· inviting schools to theatre productions targeting arson prevention
· providing materials and resources.
Watch Commander Lyden said: “Our primary focus is Key Stage 2 school children, however we have a range of resources available for other age groups. We have also produced a Special Educational Needs pack, where firefighters work with special schools, main stream schools with special needs groups, day care centres, activity and parent/carer groups and hospitals.
“Also available, is our recently updated, Nursery Box, which contains a range of materials for pre-school groups.”
