In response to the current coronavirus outbreak, Royal Mail have announced some temporary changes to how their staff will hand over parcels and ‘signed for’ items to customers at the doorstep.

Parcel recipients ‘not at risk’

A statement on the Royal Mail website reads: “Public Health England (PHE) has advised that people receiving parcels are not at risk of contracting the coronavirus. From experience with other coronaviruses, we know that these types of viruses don’t survive long on objects, such as letters or parcels.”

Precautions

However, to minimise risks, Royal Mail delivery staff will not be asking customers to handle and sign their handheld device; and parcels and packages that do not fit through the letter box will be placed at the door – delivery staff will step back and ensure the parcel is securely collected by the recipient.

Full service continues

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Royal Mail continues to deliver a full service across all parts of the UK. We have made temporary changes to delivery processes for the delivery of any parcels which cannot be posted through a letterbox, or items that require a signature.

“We take the safety and wellbeing of our employees and our customers very seriously. We have provided Public Health England preventative guidance to our colleagues in all mail handling and other roles.”

    • Pandemic sweeping the globe and what’s on your mind is a single employee, probably under s lot of pressure, exposed to this pandemic, who is perhaps new too the job, making a small human error in protocol. Not even going to direct any comment at you, anyone reading this is likely thinking the same as me.

  1. Or they just dont even bother delivering a scheduled parcel, dont put a card through the door and rake it back to the depot saying delivery attempted. Even though I was in all day waiting.

  2. This is ok for normal people but I am wheelchair dependent and cannot bend to pick a parcel up. How can I safely get my delivery.

  3. Hi
I am expecting a parcel today from Spain is ok to take it straight in the the house or should I wipe it down with an Antibacterial wipe first?

    Thanks

  4. Had a couple of packages delivered like this yesterday. Don’t blame them, the number of people they deliver to each day.

  5. Thats so annoying now we are at risks of people stealing packages and how are we supposed to know if they came 😤😤

    • They will only leave them on the doorstep if your home. If tour not home then it’s the usual process of trying a neighbour or leaving you a card to say the parcel was unable to be delivered

    • your getting annoyed at nothing Marcel, relax a little. No packages are at risk of being stolen as the article stated, bigger parcels “will be placed at the door – delivery staff will step back and ensure the parcel is securely collected by the recipient.”

  6. Come on! We have a National state of emergency, for pity’s sake! So we need to be a little more understanding and a little less demanding of all services, not just post and parcel services. There is so much negativity going on. This crisis is going to hit many of us a darn sight harder than delayed post/parcels. Give our Posties a break, please.

  7. That’s a joke a member of staff was asked to attend work at his local depot in Peterborough when he stated has family had the virus shows Royalmail don’t give a dam about staff. What about the drivers who have to be in trailers loading where is there protection.??

  8. Are you not considering the fact that people will steal the package or that it could be blown away or water damaged?atleast try to hide it and put a note saying where it is
