As part of our 2024 General Election coverage, we have contacted each candidate standing in Northfield, Bromsgrove, Edgbaston and Selly Oak constituencies asking them to contribute to this election’s ‘500 Words’ series. We have also asked the same of each candidate in the local council by-elections for Northfield and Kings Norton North wards.
Each candidate has been invited to describe themselves and their campaigns in their own words. Their submissions will be published without editing, in the order that they are received. Should they be longer than 500 words, they will be cropped.
Preet Kaur Gill • Labour • Birmingham Edgbaston
I’m Preet Kaur Gill. I have had the privilege of serving Birmingham, Edgbaston as your MP since 2017.
This constituency is my home. I was born and raised here. My family live and work here. My children go to school here.
I have never forgotten where I come from or who I represent, and at this General Election, I am standing to be your local MP again.
My first priority is to serve. Since 2017, I have helped 50,000 people, including 11,000 of you in the last year. And in that time, I have proved that I can deliver.
Together, after four years of campaigning, I was delighted to get Quinton Police Station re-opened as a base for our neighbourhood police. I was the first MP in the country to get a nuisance hostel, Saif Lodge, shut down. I helped secure millions of pounds in funding to remove Grenfell-style cladding from unsafe and unsellable flats in Edgbaston. And I campaigned with NHS whistleblowers to change the culture at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
That is just some of what I have been able to deliver as your local MP. But this election is different than others where I have asked for your vote, because this time we have the opportunity to finally turn the page on 14 years of failure in Westminster. At this election, I am asking for your support so I can take my record of delivery, and take that into Government so we can start to turn things around.
I’ve spoken to thousands of residents ahead of this election, and I know you are hungry for change. You want to see an end to empty promises from politicians who say what you want to hear at election time, but don’t have a plan to deliver.
Other candidates in Edgbaston are conspiring with the Conservatives to try and tell you politicians are all the same, or that the election result is a foregone conclusion. That suits the Conservatives just fine – because they don’t want you to give change a chance, and sneak back into power.
This constituency has never followed the national polls, and it is always a two-horse race between Labour and the Conservatives. A vote for anyone other than Labour, is a vote for five more years of the Tories.
If you want change – real change, built on the hard foundation of economic credibility, not the sand of empty promises – you need to come out and vote for it next week.
Labour’s fully-costed, fully-funded plans will deliver economic security; cut NHS waiting times; launch a new Border Security Command; set up Great British Energy; put 13,000 more neighbourhood police and PCSOs on our streets; and recruit 6,500 expert teachers to improve the life chances of our children.
Change will only happen if you vote for it on Thursday 4th July.
