Last Thursday (26th June), ARK Kings Academy’s boys handball team represented theirlocal School Sport Partnership at the Sainsbury’s Birmingham School Games summer festival at the Futsal Arena in Hockley.
The festival brought together teams from across the city, with each of the 11 local partnerships which together make up the Birmingham School Sport Partnership represented. As well as handball, students competed in rounders, netball, hockey, cricket and hockey and goalball, a version of football most often played by blind and partially sighted people.
ARK Kings’ handball players were selected to play at the summer festival after successfully making their way through ‘cluster competitions’ with other schools in their local sports partnership earlier in the year.
The summer festival was organised by the Birmingham School Sport Partnership, which works with clubs, coaches and volunteers to drive up levels of participation and success in sport at the grassroots level. The partnership helps organise competitive sport throughout the year as well as annual summer and winter festivals.
Fierce Competition
ARK Kings’ handball players played in 6 fiercely competitive games against other schools from across Birmingham. We managed to win one of our games and came close to winning in several others. After all the matches had been played, medals were awarded to:
- Bartley Green (Gold)
- Perry Beeches (Siliver)
- Shenley Academy (Bronze)
ARK Kings handball coach and teacher of PE, Mr Jackson, said,
“I’m proud of the way our boys played at the Birmingham School Games summer festival. Many of our players didn’t have any experience of playing handball before they took part in the competition. Despite this, they managed to win one of their games and come close to winning several others. The valuable experience our players gained at the summer festival will allow them to do even better in future handball competitions.”
