A 34-year-old woman – believed to be from south west Birmingham – has sadly died after an unprovoked stabbing in the city centre on Friday night (7th November).
The woman, named as Katie Fox, was rushed to hospital with a serious injury to her neck after she was stabbed at a bus stop in Smallbrook Queensway shortly before 9pm on Friday. West Midlands Police confirmed this morning that she has since tragically died in hospital.
Katie’s family are being supported by specially trained officers. Our thoughts go out to all her family and friends at this devastating time.
Djeison Rafael, described as a black British national, was arrested following the stabbing. The 21-year-old man from Smethwick, who was previously charged with attempted murder in relation to the incident, now faces a murder charge. He appeared before Birmingham Magistrates this morning where he also faced a number of other charges.
According to the BBC, Rafael was also charged with: “two counts of causing actual bodily harm on 27th October and 7th November, possession of a Stanley blade and assaulting a detention escort officer.
The case was referred to Birmingham Crown Court for a hearing on Wednesday 12th November.
Reassurance
West Midlands Police said: “Extra officers will be around Birmingham city centre to offer reassurance as we understand this is a worrying incident.”
Leader of Birmingham City Council Cllr John Cotton posted on X.com: “I am shocked and deeply saddened by this appalling attack, and my thoughts are with everyone who knew and loved Katie.
“We must work together to do all that we can to eliminate the scourge of knife crime. We remain committed to tackling knife crime through coordinated prevention, education, and enforcement efforts. The Council also continues to work closely with West Midlands Police and other partners to ensure that the city centre remains a safe and welcoming place.”
Information appeal
West Midlands Police are still appealing for more information about what happened and to trace the movements of Rafael, who was believe to be wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers and rucksack at the time of the attack.
