A consultation is underway into plans to extend the Birmingham City Centre to Selly Oak cycle route to Longbridge.

The new 6km stretch of high-quality cycle route would run along the A38 Bristol Road, between Selly Oak and Longbridge, extending the existing cycle route from Birmingham city centre to Selly Oak.

A number of junctions will be enhanced to accommodate the cycle route • CGI image of the Black Horse Junction / Great Stone Road, Northfield

As part of Birmingham’s broader Transport Plan, the scheme aims to: reduce private vehicles and increase active travel along the A38 corridor; provide a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists; and contribute to decarbonisation and improve the environment locally, supporting Birmingham City Council’s commitment to becoming a carbon neutral city by 2030.

Mainly running along the central reservation of the A38, once complete, the route will offer a safer, more accessible, and more attractive option for people travelling by bike.

The proposals would mean changes to several junctions along the route:

  • Weoley Park Road: Existing pedestrian crossing to be upgraded with segregated cycle facilities to allow crossing into central reservation.
  • Bournville Lane/Middle Park Road: New signalised junction allowing direct east-west movement for pedestrians, cyclists, and motor vehicles.
  • Sir Herbert Austin Way: Dedicated cycle crossings from new cycle route to shared cycle and pedestrian route on Sir Herbert Austin Way, integrated into existing traffic signals.
  • Great Stone Road (Black Horse Junction): Dedicated cycle crossing to central reservation, integrated into existing traffic signals.
  • South Road (Northfield Fire Station): New signalised junction, including toucan crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Broughton Close (Longbridge Technology Park): New segregated signalised crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.
A number of junctions will be enhanced to accommodate the cycle route • South Road junction, by Northfield Fire Station, will be signalised, with crossings for cyclists and pedestrians
