An application to build a new Aldi store in Longbridge was approved by city planners earlier this month.
A similar planning proposal from Aldi for the same site was refused in 2018, despite widespread support from local residents and politicians.
However, following a report from Planning Officers, members of Birmingham City Council’s Planning Committee voted unanimously in favour of approving the store on Thursday 8th August.
The store will occupy land on Bristol Road South, next to McDonald’s car park, which has been derelict for over 20 years and will create 50 local jobs.
Commenting on the proposals in 2023, Aldi Real Estate Director, Robin Williams, said: “A new store here will create up to 50 jobs, provide high-quality low-cost products for local residents struggling during this cost-of-living crisis and revitalise the area.”
Four existing properties on the land will be demolished to accommodate the development.

Few corrections bringing this statement closer to the sad truth:
– Up to 50 minimum wage, low paid jobs.
– Low-quality, and hence low-cost products.
– For the poorest local residents.
