As part of our 2024 General Election coverage, we have contacted each candidate standing in Northfield, Bromsgrove, Edgbaston and Selly Oak constituencies asking them to contribute to this election’s ‘500 Words’ series. We have also asked the same of each candidate in the local council by-elections for Northfield and Kings Norton North wards.
Each candidate has been invited to describe themselves and their campaigns in their own words. Their submissions will be published without editing, in the order that they are received. Should they be longer than 500 words, they will be cropped.
Carmel Corrigan • Labour • Kings Norton North (BCC By-Election)
I have lived, worked and raised my family in Kings Norton North for over 20 years. In that time, I have been a school governor in 3 of the 5 schools in the ward, including being a SEN governor at Fairway Primary Academy. I am a charity volunteer with a large community charity in Northfield and have worked as a constituency caseworker supporting residents living in Northfield constituency, including Kings Norton North, with a large range of issues.
If I am elected, I will be able and ready to advocate and raise issues on behalf of Kings Norton North residents from day one because I have the knowledge, skills and experience to do so.
I have always been a passionate community advocate, supporting my local community, particularly during Covid, volunteering with the Northfield Food Service to ensure vulnerable people were receiving food and with the baby bank, Baby Aid Birmingham (BAB), ensuring that vulnerable babies and young children were getting support during the pandemic.
Having worked with the Friends of Fairway Day Centre in 2017 to ensure the centre stayed open, I am already workingwith this group of amazing carers and people again and I am passionate about continuing to champion them and the important work they do.
I am committed to being a strong, local voice for Kings Norton North residents, ensuring that our voice is being heard in the Council House. If elected, I want to be meeting with residents, of all ages, to ensure we have a ward plan that represents the wishes of local people and ensures that the funding that is attached to it is being used effectively, I hope everyone will work with me to make this happen.
I have spoken with many residents who are concerned about the current levels of crime, particularly car related crime, in Kings Norton North. I will work with local police and the Labour Police and Crime Commissioner, to ensure that these concerns are properly addressed. Cars being stolen are a major problem, as is speeding on Wychall Lane, Staple Lodge Road and Rednal Road, as just some examples. I want to work with the police and local residents to make our roads safer for both road users and pedestrians.
I want to make local roads safer to travel on and address the pot holes and temporary fixes that cause damage to vehicles and make them unsafe for cyclists and pedestrians. I will work with the Highways department to address this.
I will engage with local businesses to ensure they are benefitting from any support available and will be their champion in the Council House.
The issues that affect residents in Kings Norton North affect me and my family too. This is why I am standing as a Labour candidate.
