Labour have retained two local seats and gained a third in the 2024 General Election, as a ‘landslide victory’ for Kier Starmer’s party sees a change of government.
Birmingham Northfield
Birmingham Northfield was won back by Labour with Laurence Turner receiving 14,929 votes to outgoing Conservative MP Gary Sambrook’s 9,540. Reform UK’s Stephen Peters polled 7,895 votes.

Preet Kaur Gill comfortably retained her Birmingham Edgbaston seat with 16,599 votes. Conservative Party candidate Ashvir Sangha reveived 8,231 votes with Reform again coming in third with Joshua Matthews’ 4,363 votes.

Newcomer Al Carns had little problem retaining the Birmingham Selly Oak seat, following the retirement of veteran Labour MP Steve McCabe. Here, Simon Phipps (Conservative) just pipped Reform UK’s Erin Crawford to second place with 5,834 votes to 5,732.

Council By-Elections: Northfield & Kings Norton North
Two Birmingham City Council by-elections were extremely closely fought with Labour’s Esther Rai (Northfield ward) and Carmel Corrigan (Kings Norton North) narrowly beating young hopefuls Abigail Smith and Daniel Molloy-Brookes by just 143 and 62 votes respectively.
