The Member of Parliament for Birmingham Northfield has joined the likes of ex-England footballers Gary Lineker and Gary Neville by objecting to the proposed European Super League.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are among 12 clubs who have agreed to join a new European Super League.
The 6 Premier League clubs will join AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid.
Northfield MP, Gary Sambrook said: “I strongly object to the proposed European Super League. Creating an anti-competitive league goes against everything that sport is supposed to stand for. Football is built on the principal of promotion and relegation, success being rewarded, failure punished. To create a league that these clubs do not have to qualify for shows just how little these football club owners know and understand our national game.
Every fan outside of the supposed ‘big six’ club’s dreams that one day their club may climb the football pyramid, win the top league, qualify for Europe and win the European Cup. If these proposals go ahead, they will crush the dream of millions of millions of football fans across Europe. With the death of fans dreams and hopes it is the death of football. So much of joy of football is the hope and unknown that fans go through each year. Without fans football is nothing.
To put it another way, this league is like deciding general election results will be announced by the Government in future rather than letting the public vote on who they want to win. It would be wrong.
The European Super League must be stopped”.
