Census year means new jobs and helping your community

The census is coming in March and by taking part you can make sure that your community gets the services and support it needs. 

In the build up to Census Day on March 21, a range of jobs are available across south Birmingham including officer roles, interviewers and team leaders at website www.censusjobs.co.uk as the Office for National Statistics(ONS) is hiring over 3,000 people in the West Midlands.

The once-in-a-decade nationwide survey of housing and the population helps decide how services are planned and funded in your local area from doctors’ surgeries to new school places and bus routes. Charities also use census data to support their applications for funding.

For the first time, the census will ask if people have served in the UK Armed Forces. The information will help understand the numbers, locations and ages of the country’s armed forces community and show where resources and services are needed to make sure those who have served, and their families, are treated fairly.

Ahead of Census Day, the Office for National Statistics will send every household a letter in the post with an access code and instructions. You can do your census online as soon as you get yours. If your household circumstances change on Census Day, you can let the ONS know.

The ONS aim to make things as easy as possible for everyone, but if you need help taking part in the census, there’s a wide range of support services available.You can request support for yourself, or someone else, including:

• guidance and help in many languages and formats
• a paper version of the questionnaire, if you prefer
• accessible census guidance, for example, in braille
