#WeJustRead: TV licences: BBC to go ahead with over-75s licence fee changes
The BBC is to go ahead with a plan to end free TV licences for most over-75s, after a two-month delay because of the coronavirus pandemic.
That means more than three million households will be asked to start paying the £157.50 fee from 1 August.
Only those who receive the Pension Credit benefit will be exempt.
The BBC said the new scheme is “the fairest decision”, but the government said it was “the wrong decision” and Age UK called it “a kick in the teeth”.

Is this to cover the gross financial incompetence with regards the £90m budget for the new Eastenders set – £30m over budget and 5 years overdue?
The BBC is an appalling broadcaster, and the quicker the licence fee is abolished the quicker we will see the BBC struggle in the highly competitive private sector!
No, it’s to cover the loss of funding from government, after the Tory party decided they didnt want to carry on funding the free TV licence for over 75’s anymore and thought they could palm that responsibility onto someone else for it instead.
The government write the legislation for the BBC, if they wanted to protect free TV licence for over 75’s they should of either kept funding them or made sure they legislated that the BBC would take over the funding permanently, they didn’t and knew the BBC couldn’t possibly continue it in perpetuity.
As usual with the Tories they know the price of everything but not its value to the people it benefits.
The government should just scrap the tv license altogether and fund it directly from taxes, instead of putting in ‘middle men’ syphoning off their cuts to administrate and enforce the current system, Thus reducing the actual contribution towards the BBC per household.
Should not fund them at all if the pay rates are to be believed. Hundred thousand pounds or something stupid for people like Lineker and nager manchetti is a joke.
Nothing any good on BBC why pay for licence when the other channels are free. Dont they think the old folke have paid enough duties in tax over the years.
Let me guess, privatise it? ie flog it off to some Tory donar who banks in a tax haven and owns a daily newspaper.
Then what? how would you replace the lost funding and soft power around the world it affords us?
