Andy Parsons is a Brummie who now lives in Sheffield. He and his best mate Robin Bates penned a song – Bluebells – A love song for Birmingham.
These are Andy’s thoughts…
“There are not enough songs about Birmingham. The Americans are great at writing about their home towns and even places they just drive through but it’s not really part of the British music tradition.
That was the inspiration for writing “Bluebells – A love song for Birmingham” along with the powerful memories of going up the Lickeys to see the bluebells with my parents, friends and children over the years.
The song is also about Birmingham’s transformation from the “City of a Thousand Trades” to an educational, commercial and cultural hub as seen from the fabulous views from the Lickeys.
Like many Brummies, I am wistful about that and I think it is important that we remember our history both as a city and as our family stories.
What are your memories of trips to Lickeys? Did you pick the bluebells or just let them be?
Also check out the picture in the video of me and best mate Robin who co wrote the song, demonstrating what 19 year old d**ks we were. Maybe you can name the firms we refer to in the song. I guess there may be many more Brummie songs out there. I for one would love to hear them.”
Well done to Andy and Robin. We absolutely love this song and agree wholeheartedly that “”There are not enough songs about Birmingham”.
