Sherriff Mbye

Police have confirmed this morning that an 18 year old man sadly died following an incident in Northfield yesterday evening, which left a second man, 19, critically ill in hospital.

Police were called to reports of an incident outside KFC on Bristol Road South at around 5pm on Friday 17th April. They found a 19 year old man with stab wounds was being tended to by customers in Biggz barbers. He remains in a critical condition in hospital this morning.

18 year old Sherriff Mbye, from Lee Bank, was reported to have arrived at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in a white Audi, which had been seen leaving the Northfield scene. The Audi then sped off after leaving him at the hospital. He died two hours later from multiple stab wounds, despite the efforts of staff.

The Audi was later found abandoned in Ladywood.

An 18 year old local man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. A small number of other men, believed to have been involved in the incident, are being sought as part of a police investigation.

Bristol Road South remains closed to traffic around KFC and Biggz while officers continue to examine the scene.

Detective Inspector Harry Harrison, from Force CID, is leading the investigation. He said: “My condolences go to the family of Sheriff who are heartbroken at losing their loved one.

“I would like to reassure them that many people who were in the area at the time responded admirably to the terrible situation which confronted them. Both victims were tended to, details of possible people or vehicles involved were relayed to police and vital clues were guarded. Their assistance has been invaluable to our investigation.

“I’d also thank those people who have helped us so far and ask that others follow their lead by doing the right thing. If you were in the area at the time, and you have not yet spoken to police, please do so now.

“You may have seen the actual stabbings or the argument and scuffle beforehand. You could have possibly seen the Audi arriving at the scene or racing away after the attack. If you did, you need to call us immediately.

“This will have been a very frightening situation to witness but we are very experienced at supporting people who are worried about giving information.”

Door-to-door inquiries continue today and murder detectives will be trawling the hours of CCTV footage downloaded from cameras in the area.

A post mortem will take place later today to determine the precise cause of death.

Anyone with information which may help Det Insp Harrison with his investigation should call him on 101. Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Our thoughts go out to the victims and their family and friends. Well done to all those who assisted.
