West Midlands Police are investigating after a bus driver was purposely sprayed in the face by a group of males who didn’t want to pay the bus fare.

The assault happened yesterday (Sunday 19th May) at roughly 3:10pm when a group, described as 6 teenagers, got onto the number 18 bus in Northfield town centre.

It’s believed the boys tried to use the service without payment and when challenged by the bus driver, one of the group leant through the gap in the partition and sprayed him in the eyes with deodorant, causing stinging and soreness to the eyes.

The group then vacated the bus and made off.

Nick, who was on the bus said: “The driver was a really nice driver and was only trying to get some kids off the bus for not paying the fare. Well done to him for dealing with the situation so well.”

Another passenger on the bus, Alison, said: “The bus driver was such a pleasant man! He was only doing his job! He eyes were so sore bless him! Hope he has a speedy recovery xx”

Enquiries are on-going and CCTV will be viewed from on-board the bus.
