The man, in his 20s, was driving a black Vauxhall Corsa which collided with a tree and the gates of Woodgate Valley Country Park at around 3.45am.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said he was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed the man’s injuries were not life threatening. She said: “One man, who managed to self-extricate from the car, was given treatment on scene for injuries not thought to be life threatening before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for further checks.”

Clapgate Lane remained closed between the scene and Kitwell Lane for several hours while collision investigators examined the scene. The road is now reopened.
