A dedicated teacher has enlisted the help of pupils across four academies to raise money for charity.
Richard Mcllwraith, a PE Teacher from Smith’s Wood Academy, which is part of Fairfax Muliti- Academy, encouraged more than 70 pupils and staff to join him on a 33-mile sponsored walk between the four academies.
Mr Mcllwraith, who completed the full circuit in less than 15 hours, started his journey at Smith’s Wood Academy, where he was joined by students and staff during the six mile walk to Fairfax academy in Sutton Coldfield.
He completed the final leg of the 13-mile journey back to Smith’s woof alongside a walking partner at around 10:30pm.
Richard said: “It was lovely to see all four schools within the trust come together for such a worthwhile cause. Both pupils and staff really got into the spirit of walking and their commitment was truly inspiring.
“For many it became a personal challenge, especially as they had never really walked such distances in the past. Smith’s Wood has taken part in Sport Relief for the past three years, but this time, I wanted to do something bigger.
“I hope that with the support of our pupils and staff, we’re able to really make a difference.”
Chris Stevens, interim CEO at Fairfax Multi-Academy Trust, said: “We’re thrilled to have such committed staff and pupils happy and willing to give back to those less fortunate – a value we aim to instil in all our pupils.
“A hearty congratulations to Richard and everyone involved – they should be very proud of their achievement.”
