On Saturday (16 March), Roger Hackley, received a 2019 Community Champion award at Villa Park on behalf of his late partner Ruth Stebbens.
Ruth was the executive manager at CASBA – a Northfield based charity which supports adults with learning disabilities and their families and carers.
Sadly, 45 year old Ruth died suddenly in January this year, but she leaves behind a legacy of championing equality for people with learning disabilities, having worked at CASBA for nearly two decades.
She was dedicated to improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the South Birmingham area and the respect she was held in could be clearly seen, with over a hundred people attending her funeral last month.
The award is run by the Aston Villa Foundation as part of the Supporting Our Own initiative, which is the club’s commitment to its local community.
Celebration of Life
CASBA will also be holding a celebration of Ruth’s life for all those who worked with her at St Laurence Pastoral Centre in early April. Call 0121 4750777 if you would like to attend.
Editor’s note: B31 Voices would like to extend condolences to Ruth’s family, friends and colleagues. It is fitting that she should receive this award – she was a true, inspiring Community Champion and will be missed by many. Rest in peace, Ruth. Sas & Marty x
