Help needed! Could you be a community-building Foodcycler?!

0

National charity Foodcycle is seeking volunteers to help out at its latest reclaimed food café event in Longbridge.

Foodcycle projects operate in 41 communities across England, and the organisation is celebrating its 10th birthday this year, having served over 1 million tasty meals made from food which would otherwise have ended up in landfill.

Food!

Foodcycle guests are offered a tasty, freshly prepared three course meal in a sociable, friendly setting. All members of the community are welcome as guests, to sit and eat alongside the community volunteers who have prepared the food.

Now Foodcycle is coming to Longbridge, and volunteers are sought to take part in the weekly Monday evening events which are coming soon to Longbridge Methodist Church!

Reducing social isolation

Foodcycle’s Regional Manager for the South West & Midlands, Justin Powell, is urging the local community to take part in this rewarding project. One of the most important aspects is that guests and volunteers sit down and share the meal together, in friendship.

Justin said: “We work within lots of different communities and meet all kinds of people at our projects. Many of our guests include older people, people dealing with mental health issues, those affected by homelessness, low-income families, asylum seekers and refugees, and people who are long-term unemployed.

“At every meal, volunteers and guests sit down together to eat the meal together. Conversation flows, barriers are broken down and friendships are formed.”

‘Brilliant’ volunteers

Volunteering opportunities include cooking the food (experience not necessary!), hosting the guests and collecting surplus food donations from suppliers.

Justin said: “FoodCycle Birmingham Longbridge can only be possible with brilliant volunteers giving their time, enthusiasm and energy.

“We want as many local volunteers as possible and everyone is welcome to be a part of FoodCycle.”
