Acorns Children’s Hospice has been recognised for its vital work in the region by the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

The charity won the Excellence in Contribution to the Community Award at the annual Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce Dinner and Awards, which was held at the ICC last night (19 April).

Acorns saw-off stiff competition from a number of Midlands based charities, and was awarded for its work providing specialist palliative care for life limited and life threatened children and support for their families.

Toby Porter, Acorns Chief Executive, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to win this prestigious award, especially in our 30th anniversary year.

“Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to provide vital care and support for life limited and life threatened children and their families, both in our hospices and the community. Thanks to them, we are there for those children and families that need us most, every single day of the year.

“We could not do this work without the valued support of Birmingham businesses and the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

“We would like to dedicate this award to those whose generosity has helped keep us going for the last 30 years and to those who we are yet to meet who will help us thrive for the next 30 years.”

The annual Awards are one of the most prestigious events in the region’s business calendar attracting over 1,200 guests from businesses across Greater Birmingham.

Acorns was recently appointed as the president’s charity for the dinner and awards – and for 2018 as a whole.

Commenting on the appointment, Chamber president Paul Kehoe, said: “This is charity I’ve worked with for the last ten years, and it felt apt to make them my president’s charity as they mark their 30th year, which is a fantastic achievement.

“It costs nearly £10m each year to run the hospice, and Acorns relies on fundraising for the majority of this sum – so they quite literally need every penny they can get.”

In the past year Acorns has cared for over 870 children and more than 1,090 families, including those who are bereaved.
