After three weeks of no competitive football West Heath Hayes returned to action against Henley Forest Reserves in our first away game of the season.  The Hayes were keen to build on their opening day victory against FC Stratford A by securing another three points.

Line-up

Hayes dominated the first half with Neil Peplow’s headed goal from a corner being disallowed.  McKinney and Cook had multiple chances but were unfortunate not to convert.   Henley pulled their defensive back line deep to mitigate the Hayes’ attacks.

The start of the second half was equally as frustrating with a number of clear cut chances not being taken.  Around 65 minutes Mike Grundy broke the deadlock from 6 yards.  Henley soon equalised as the Hayes conceded a soft penalty which keeper Matt Talbot was unable to save.

Substitute Jamie Taylor was brought on to bring some pace to the attack line and made an immediate impact by slotting the ball into the corner of the net to make it 2-1.  The Hayes had the majority of the possession with Mike Grundy’s driving runs from midfield putting Henley on the back foot.

Against the run play Henley scored a very good goal on the break to make it 2-2.  With less than 5 minutes to play it looked likely that the points would be shared.  Luckily for the Hayes Taylor was at hand to score an extra time winner by breaking into the box and placing his shot past the Henley keeper.

That makes it 2 wins in a row for the Hayes and our next fixture will be a top of the table clash with Welford.
