London Midland have lost the franchise for providing trains across the West Midlands, including the busy Cross City Line, and have been replaced by joint venture West Midland Trains Ltd, who are planning nearly £1bn of investment to improve services across the region.
Amongst the improvements specifically for the Cross City line which runs from Lichfield across Birmingham and through Selly Oak, Kings Norton, Northfield and Longbridge to Barnt Green and Redditch:
- Extension of the Cross City line to Bromsgrove
- Over 100 new electric carriages
- More trains on a Sunday
- A strategy to deliver services during the autumn leaf fall period
- Improvements to the quality of stations, trains and customer services
We’re going to have to be patient though, as there’s a staggered timeline for implementation with some improvements planned for December 2018 and others not until 2021.
The franchise that will be operated by West Midland Trains Ltd also includes trains from London Euston to Crewe and from Liverpool to Birmingham.
