West Midlands Police are seeking help from the general public after a 96-year-old woman was assaulted in her own home by a suspected distraction burglar.

On Monday the 10th July, the elderly lady was in her Stirchley home on Derwent Road when a man started to bang on her window to get her attention.

She went to the front door to speak with the man, he proclaimed that he needed access to her rear garden in order to take machinery into a neighbouring property.

Not convinced and suspecting he wasn’t telling the truth, she refused to let him inside – but as she tried to shut the door he barged past her into the house and stole the contents of her handbag.

Enquires led investigating officers to a shop in Birmingham where CCTV captured a man with the victims items.

Officers are eager to question the man caught on camera and urge anybody with information to come forward and help identify the man.
