West Midlands Police dispatched response officers, including firearms and dog support, when they received a call of a man being spotted with an axe in Northfield Shopping Centre at around 10am this morning (Wednesday 29th March).

Officers were on scene within 2 minutes and a full area search was carried out. No further calls were received and there were no reports of anyone being threatened or injured.

Birmingham Police Inspector Matt Minton, said: “There was no trace of the man; we’ve not received any reports of people being threatened or assaulted. We didn’t receive any other 999 calls – but clearly in the current climate it’s not acceptable for people to be walking around in busy public places carrying an axe.

“If anyone saw the man, or believes they know who it was, I’d ask them to call us so we can make contact with him. We’d always encourage people to be vigilant and report any concerns or suspicious behaviour they witness.”

If you saw anything or know who the man was, please call police on 101
