The four teenagers who left a 70-year-old with a fractured skull as she travelled in a taxi with her husband last May – were today (3rd February) sentenced at Birmingham Youth Court.
At an earlier hearing where they were found guilty of wounding and conspiracy and to cause damage, the court heard how the young defendants − one aged 15, two 16 and a 17-year-old − targeted several black taxis with stones as they travelled along Bristol Road, Edgbaston, on 25th May 2016.
The CCTV footage from inside the taxi shows the horrific moment when a rock thrown by one of the louts smashed through the window, sending shards of glass flying through the back of the cab and striking the woman on her forehead.
They have now been given a 12 month rehabilitation order that comes with a curfew. Two of the teenagers were also served with an intensive surveillance programme aimed at rehabilitiation and prevention.
WARNING – Distressing footage
The quick thinking taxi-driver dialled 999 and took the lady directly to hospital where she was treated for her injuries.
Following the attack, local neighbourhood officers and detectives worked closely with the community to encourage several key witnesses to come forward.
Police have praised local people for coming forward to help convict the thugs.
Inspector Vanessa Eyles, from the investigation team, said: “This was a horrifying attack that injured an innocent person; it is only by pure chance that we did not have to deal with something far more serious.
“The lady was obviously traumatised by the incident and has had to have a lot of medical treatment. She is still continuing to recover. We hope that this sentence offers some comfort to the victim and the wider community.
“The footage taken from the cab was extremely shocking, but it did not help us to identify the people responsible. Without the community having the bravery to stand up to these thugs we may not have had this positive outcome.
“We will continue to work with the community to ensure that this does not happen again.”
