Updated 10th December 2016:
A 55 year old man was arrested by officers this morning, (Saturday 10 December) following a CCTV appeal of the van released by police yesterday.
He is currently in custody where he will be questioned on suspicion of kidnap and serious sexual assault.
Officers have this morning also recovered a silver van which is being forensically examined.
West Midlands Police believe the driver of the silver van pictured subjected a teenage boy to a serious sexual assault in Birmingham city centre.
The 16-year-old was in Kent Street at around 10pm on Wednesday 30 November when he was offered a lift by a man driving a silver van.
He was driven to nearby Claybrook Street and subjected to a serious sexual assault having been locked inside the vehicle.
The boy had been out on a shopping trip and had missed his last train home…he was walking to the bus stop when the van driver approached and offered a lift.
He accepted but moments later was locked in the van and assaulted. The boy was not physically injured but was clearly left very badly shaken by the ordeal.
The offender is described as:
- A chubby Asian man
- In his 40s or 50s
- Short black hair
- Short pointed nose
- Bad teeth
- Unkempt in appearance, with stubble and with bad breath.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We’ve issued a CCTV image of the suspect’s van, which was carrying ladders on the roof, and are urging anyone with information to get in touch.”
The silver van was carrying a ladder set on the roof (possibly a works van) and it’s interior was said to be untidy with rubbish on the floor and paperwork on the dashboard.
Anyone with information is urged to call DC Sarah Harvey at the Child Abuse Team at Ladywood police station on the 101 number (ext 862 6020) or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
