Students will be giving Northfield shoppers makeovers and massages at a pop-up pamper parlour to raise funds for charity.

The team of trainee hairdressers from Bournville College will be offering the free hair, beauty and nail treatments, plus children’s face-painting, at Northfield Shopping Centre on April 26.

The Pamper Day is to raise funds to help buy electronic tablets  – similar to iPads –  to keep youngsters entertained during family appointments at Birmingham Women’s Hospital.

The centre of excellence provides specialist healthcare for women and their families in the West Midlands, with gynaecological, maternity and neonatal care, plus a fertility centre.

Bournville College hairdressing course team leader Becci Nicholls will be overseeing the event, along with her sister Pippa Clarke, a college technician

Becci said: “This is a great opportunity for the Level 2 hairdressing students to get out and practise their skills and also help raise funds for charity.

“We will be offering beauty treatments, such as make-up, curling and straightening hair, hand massages and nail treatments. However, for safety reasons we won’t be cutting or colouring hair.

“Our students have previously been to the hospital’s special care unit to pamper the new mums, and we have also been to other hospitals and care homes to offer our services.”

Northfield Shopping Centre manager Adam Meade is looking forward to welcoming the students for the Pamper Day.

He said: “I am sure that our shoppers will be more than happy to donate to this excellent cause, as they are always so generous.

“In addition, this is a great chance to be pampered themselves, as a well-deserved treat after some retail therapy in our stores.”

Eileen Rock, Birmingham Women’s Hospital’s fund-raising manager, said: “We are looking to buy half a dozen of the tablets, which will be used in different parts of the hospital, such as ante-natal, the fetal medicine clinic or the ultrasound scan department.

“The tablets can be wall mounted, so children can play on them while they are waiting with their family for an appointment.

“We are very grateful to the students for arranging this, and to Northfield Shopping Centre for hosting the event.”

Northfield Shopping centre is home to more than 40 stores, from fashion, health and beauty to services and food and drink, and has more than 650 parking spaces.
