Pupils from Ark Rose Primary Academy in Kings Norton are brimming with confidence after taking part in a special day of creative activities beyond the classroom.

On Friday 22 May, headteacher Mrs Webb suspended the normal school timetable. Instead of learning the three Rs, pupils instead got to enjoy a special ‘Confidence Day’, centred on singing, dancing and the power of imagination.

In the morning, pupils took part in creative learning exercises led by professionals from the Bigfoot Arts Education. Facilitators Bracken and Arnie started off by getting pupils to boost their energy levels by moving around and learning how to stand with a confident posture.

In next to no time, pupils were happily giving lots of new things a go, from competing to decide who can best dance like a funky chicken through to beatboxing and singing.

Chardonnay Davis Kelly (age 8):  said: “I felt confident when we learnt how to beat box”. Darnell Gittens-Corbett (age 7), said: “I felt really happy and confident! I enjoyed it when everybody cheered and clapped.”

In the afternoon, pupils put their newfound confidence to good use by performing in the ‘Ark Rose has got talent’ talent show. Pupils and staff were treated to singing, dancing, football tricks and even a spot of breakdancing. Pupils from year 5 were so confident in their singing talent that they even recorded their performance for posterity using specialist recording equipment.

Ark Rose Primary Academy organised the special Confidence Day because it recognises the importance of confidence to ensuring children flourish both academically and socially.

Headteacher Mrs Webb said:

“Like all of us, our pupils perform at their best when they feel good about themselves and are confident in their abilities. Pupils will carry with them the boost in confidence and self-belief they have gained today and this will help them to work hard in lessons and achieve their full potential.”

Confidence Day is part of a series of five special ‘values days’ which run throughout the school year at Ark Rose Primary Academy. Each day is based on one of the academy’s core values of resilience, engagement, ambition, confidence and honesty (REACH).

As well as holding special values days, Ark Rose Primary also promotes and celebrates its core values through weekly awards. Every week, teachers nominate pupils for a REACH award when they demonstrate resilience, engagement, ambition, confidence or honesty. Pupils receive a certificate and have their photo displayed in reception and the main hall.
