As part of our coverage of 2015 local and General elections, we have invited candidates from Northfield and Bromsgrove constituencies (general election) and Kings Norton, Longbridge, Northfield, Weoley, Rubery North and Rubery South wards (local elections) to send in 500 Words describing themselves and their campaign.

This from Birmingham Kings Norton ward candidate for Labour, Peter Griffiths

IMG_2238.JPGFormer Steeplechaser, Peter Griffiths represented his country in the 3000m event in 1977. His experience of long distance running has no doubt helped him handle the long haul of politics- first as a constituency worker and as a Professional Assistant to Estelle Morris, Education and Culture Minister until her retirement in 2005 and since 2011 as Councillor for Kings Norton.

As a Councillor Peter wants to help develop coherent local community services, which provide training and employment opportunities for local residents including young people.

He starts at 6 am, checking correspondence and answering emails and letters. His postbag and inbox offer up a range of queries from people wanting to challenge council decisions to those needing help to solve problems that are affecting them directly.

Peter believes councillors are a valuable resource for their communities they represent. We are the link between statutory organisations like social services and the police. My role is to help resolve local issues, and at a time when budgets are being cut, find creative solutions. Peter is a member of the planning committee and has been an active supporter during campaigns for local retailers and residents with issues on The Green at Kings Norton. He often goes walkabout on his patch keeping an ear to the ground which gives him a chance to talk to local residents.

As a Councillor, Peter serves on Ward and District Committees and holds regular advice desks where residents can come and talk to him about any issues or concerns they may have. He would like the chance to continue the work he has been doing for the past four years. If you want a hard working Councillor who cares about the people in Kings Norton vote for Peter on May 7th 2015
