On 13th February all Year 8 students took part in an exciting cross-curricular day of learning as part of the Turves Green Girls’ School Diversity Day. This is the second year we have run a Diversity Day, which we introduced for the first time last year. By working across different subjects pupils were challenged to synthesise learning from different areas of learning in order to express a clear message about the value of diversity.
This year we had a literary theme. Pupils began the day with poetry workshops, analysing poems by Maya Angelou, Carol Ann Duffy, John Agard as well as lyrics by Lady Gaga. Students then worked in Art, Drama, Music or Dance to respond to the poem and reflect the issue of diversity in a creative way. In the afternoon the whole year group gathered to share their learning and to perform to each other.
It was a very successful and enjoyable day and important learning took place, with pupils developing their appreciation of the positive value of diversity in society and their understanding of what diversity and equality means, including the different characteristics that our society protects in law such as race, gender, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation.
