A man suffered serious injuries, including a head injury, when he was trapped in his car by a fallen tree. The accident happened during high winds in Shenley Fields Road at around 1.40pm today (Tuesday 31st March).

Immediate assistance was given by the crew of a passing ambulance moments after the accident. A paramedic area support officer and two further ambulances attended and, despite the strong winds, a trauma team from Cosford arrived by air ambulance.

Birmingham South Police and traffic police diverted traffic while fire crews from Woodgate Valley and Northfield worked to free the man.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The driver who had numerous injuries including a head injury was trapped in his car. With the help of the fire service, he was freed, placed on a scoop stretcher and, accompanied by the trauma team from the air ambulance, he was taken by land ambulance on blue lights to the major trauma centre at the nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.”

The road was still closed by evening rush hour as the scene was cleared.

In a separate incident, a tree fell on to a house in nearby Quarry Road, Weoley Castle. Fire crews made the building safe and nearby trees were checked. Fortunately, no-one was inside the house at the time of the incident.
