A Northfield man appeared before Birmingham Magistrates this morning, charged with two counts of rape following a sexual assault in a Kings Norton church yard last weekend.

Michael James Ware, 22, faces two rape charges, as well as one count of assault by penetration, possessing a firearm and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

The charges follow a report that a young woman suffered a serious sexual assault in St Nicolas church yard as she walked home from Kings Norton Station at around 9pm on Saturday 6th December.

West Midlands Police arrested Ware on Monday after he was spotted in the area by patrolling officers.

Ware was remanded in custody to appear before Birmingham Crown Court in March 2015.
