St Laurence Junior School in Northfield are proud of their sporting achievements this year – and so they should be!
This academic year, the school have competed in 14 different sports, including hockey, table tennis, gymnastics and tri-golf as well as the more common football, netball and cricket.
Boys and girls from all year groups have attended clubs before and after school, as well as lunch times and 157 different children have been involved in fixtures and competitions.
And they’ve done well to! The school are Birmingham School Winter Games Hockey Champions and Football Runners-Up. They’ve performed well in local competitions in tag rugby, athletics, rounders and cross country. They are Boys Year 5 Birmingham Football Champions and have reached county level or beyond in Futsal, tag rugby, girls football and cricket.
The emphasis at the school is on enjoyment and the benefits of sport in terms of health and fitness, as well as learning to win and lose in the right manner. Children are rewarded with opportunities if they commit to their chosen sport and demonstrate positive attitudes and behaviours. They say: “Our success is built around teamwork. We don’t just have one team, we have a whole squad and everybody contributes.”
And to top it all, the school qualified to represent the Colmers Partnership in four separate events at the Birmingham Sainsbury’s Summer Games at King Edward’s School on Friday 11th July, and took away medals in all four sports!
In a fantastic end to a successful sporting year, the school became Birmingham Champions at tennis and rounders as well as runners-up at tri-golf and third place in tag rugby. Thirty-six St Laurence children took part in the Summer Games and they loved the event as they came away with freebies and got to try their hand at other sports too like fencing and archery, all courtesy of Sainsbury’s, Sytner and a number of volunteers and Sports Leaders.
Congratulations to all the pupils and staff at St Laurence and best of luck for next year!
