A young illustrator from Kings Norton in Birmingham is taking her first steps into the business world after launching her own illustration design studio.

Twenty-two year old Nicola Brissett has set-up Monarda Creative to help pave her way into the illustrated advertising industry.

The former Hillcrest School pupil, who studied A Levels in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics  and Art at Cadbury College, was originally thinking about a career as a meteorologist but her plans changed after A Levels, when she decided to follow a more creative path.

She began a tattooing apprenticeship but was faced with a lack of volunteers to train on, so after one year Nicola began considering alternative careers and started studying a Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design, which she completed in 2013.

Earlier this year, the young entrepreneur launched Monarda Creative and has been busy creating bespoke artwork to showcase her unique hand-drawn illustrations.  She said:

“I want to get into illustrated advertising, but it’s very competitive. So I decided I can’t just sit around and wait for the right job to come along. I’m trying to make it on my own by getting out there and promoting my work.”

She has set up a website and is actively networking to help grow her young business.  Nicola specialises in creating beautiful artwork whether it be for an editorial, children’s book, advert or greeting card. She said:

“I have a creative mind which enables me to produce original artwork which can promote a business in a unique or quirky way. My illustrations can be used in print media, adverts, websites or even framed on a wall.”

Nicola is keen to make links with organisations who are interested in learning more about how digital illustration can help their business. View Nicola’s work online at
