West Midlands Police have today named the teen who sadly died following a freak accident at a Kings Norton bus stop on Monday night (18th March).
Manny Edwards, 18, from Kings Heath was injured as he ran for a number 35 bus in Hillmeads Road at around 10.30pm.
CCTV footage showed that Manny collided with the bus stop, falling over. Although he managed to get back to his feet, he fell back to the floor seconds later.
West Midlands Police officers were first on the scene and administered first aid and CPR. When paramedic crews arrived they confirmed he was in cardiac arrest and took over CPR and Advanced Life Support and transported him to hospital.
However, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed yesterday: “Sadly, despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at [Queen Elizabeth] hospital.”
The case has been referred to the coroner and a post mortem examination will take place in due course to confirm the precise cause of death.
South Birmingham Police Detective Chief Inspector, Simon Inglis, said: “This was a terrible accident… it’s shocking that a young man could lose his life in such circumstances.”
And DCI Inglis sought to reassure the public that the death was purely accidental, saying: “We understand there were some rumours flying around the community that there was something sinister behind Manny’s death and that he had been attacked − but I can assure people that is certainly not the case.
“Our thoughts go out to Manny’s family and friends as they try to come to terms with his tragedy.”
Our thoughts are with Manny’s family and friends at this sad time. x
