A Kings Norton teenage runner is snapping at the heels of his father after winning 3rd place in the Under 17s Staffordshire Cross Country today.
16 year old Gareth Griffiths runs for Tipton Running Club and is currently studying for A Levels at Kings Norton Boys School Sixth Form.
And Gareth has the perfect role model for his running career. His dad, Kings Norton councillor and Northfield District Chair Peter Griffiths, used to be pretty nifty on his feet too!
Peter’s running career saw him represent Great Britain in the 3000m steeple chase and 3000m indoors events. After representing Wales in the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970, Peter also raced in the world cross country in Morocco 1975 and Stirling in Scotland 1976.
A tough act to follow, but Gareth is working hard to try and achieve as much as possible in his own right with his running.
Gareth’s parents, Peter and Carole Griffiths said: “We are proud of Gareth because he is a determined young man who works hard and his training has paid off.”
Gareth’s next big challenge will be the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships and Cross Challenge Final at Cofton Park on Saturday 8th March 2014.
Good luck, Gareth!
