UPDATE 13:30hrs Police have arrested a 22 year old man near the scene on suspicion of murder. The victim has been named as 16 year old Christina Edkins who went to Leasowes School, Halesowen. For more information visit the West Midlands Police website

West Midlands Police have launched a major manhunt as part of the investigation into the fatal stabbing of a 16 year old girl on her way to school on the Number 9 bus in Hagley Road, Edgbaston at around 7.30 this morning.

“Initial descriptions of the knifeman from witnesses is a black man in his teens with very dark skin who was wearing dark coloured clothing. His jacket is thought to have a tiger’s head or other large motif printed on the back.” He may have been carrying a bag of some sort or had a bandaged hand.

Police advise members of the public not to approach the man but phone 999 with any sightings.

Officers have spoken to a large number of witnesses at the scene but anyone with information which may help police find the person responsible for killing the girl should call officers immediately on the dedicated incident room hotline: 0800 096 0095.
