Longbridge councillor Jess Phillips has spoken to the Birmingham Mail about her concerns surrounding a Birmingham beauty pageant for 13 to 16 year olds.

The new Junior Miss Birmingham competition includes a sportswear section where girls may wear dance outfits such as leotards.

Cllr Phillips, who was appointed as Birmingham City Council’s first Victims’ Champion last June, told the Birmingham Mail: “I’m extremely wary of something like this which only continues to promote the exploitation of young girls which we see every day in this country.”

She went on to say: “Girls should be heralded for their amazing resilience, tenacity, and talent, not for their beauty.”

  1. Warholian moments of fame. Blame Simon Cowell and the like – fame without talent and it must be now. Jess is correct to object this is blatent exploitation.
